40th Annual National Smile Month Celebrates Dentistry

“You're never fully dressed without a smile.”

National Smile Month began on May 16, 2016, and will be celebrated until June 16. The campaign was launched 40 years ago by the Oral Health Foundation to encourage awareness for just how important your smile is. Your Las Vegas restorative dentist cares for your oral health and well-being and has some tips for how you can better your smile and better your dental health.

Visit your Las Vegas dentist for regular check ups.

Dr. James White is eager to share dental advice to his patients. If you’re concerned about your oral health, Dr. White can help you achieve the smile you want with better care and restorative dentistry. Regular visits to Dr. White decreases the likelihood that you’ll develop oral diseases. We even screen for oral cancer at our comprehensive dentistry in Las Vegas.

Brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day.

We can’t say it enough: Getting in the habit of brushing and flossing daily is the most basic and essential way to ensure your oral health. Dr. White’s restorative dentistry recommends fluoride toothpaste that strengthens enamel. Brushes and brush heads for electric toothbrushes should be replaced every 4-6 months. Brush your gums and teeth at a 45-degree angle for at least 45 seconds in each quadrant, or about 2-3 minutes total.

Reduce your sugar and soda consumption.

The more sugar you consume, the more bacteria is able to feed off those sugars, releasing acids that break down your enamel and cause cavities. It takes about an hour after a meal for acids to neutralize, so if you’re munching on food throughout the day or always have soda within reach, your teeth are constantly attacked by acid. Remember to drink water throughout the day and after meals or beverages to swish your mouth with water to combat acid taking over.

For the duration of National Smile Month, begin the habit of flossing or quitting a soda addiction. After a long day it’s easy to say, “I’ll brush in the morning,” but trust us, your teeth can’t wait. You need them all your life! Upkeep your oral health or invest in restorative dentistry at Dr. James White’s Las Vegas dentistry.
