What is TMJ Disorder?

TMJ disorder refers to problems with a patient’s temporomandibular joint. You can feel this joint on the side of your face—it connects your skull near your ear to your lower jaw. This jaw allows you to speak and chew.

Unfortunately, sometimes this joint can become damaged or inflamed. This can lead to a host of unwanted symptoms and even permanent jaw damage.

What Are Some TMJ Symptoms?

You may experience a range of symptoms depending on your unique TMJ situation. Here are just some of the ways that TMJ problems manifest:

· Headaches

· Earaches

· Neck pain

· Jaw pain

· Clicking or popping noises when the patient moves his or her jaw

· Dental grinding or clenching—this may be happening as you sleep at night

· Limited jaw mobility—sometimes people find that their jaws “lock” as the patient tries to open his or her mouth. As you can imagine, this may make it difficult to bite and chew.

Sometimes patients suffer from just one of these issues, while other people may struggle with multiple problems. Additionally, symptoms can, and actually often do, increase and intensify over time.

So if you do notice any of these symptoms, it is in your best interest to speak to a TMJ care provider as soon as possible. Early intervention has been shown to improve a patient’s prognosis, and help prevent additional TMJ deterioration.
