Dental crowns are a versatile tool that experienced dentists rely on. Dr. James White uses dental crowns in his practice for a wide variety of cosmetic and restorative dentistry purposes. Dr. White discusses the uses and benefits of dental crowns in Las Vegas, NV and what they can do for you.
Cracked or Broken Teeth
As long as the tooth root is still intact on the impacted tooth, a dental crown is a restorative option for your broken tooth. The crown goes over your entire tooth. This helps keep it stable even with the break. It also helps prevent tooth decay from burrowing far into the tooth around where it’s broken.
Stability After a Root Canal
A root canal involves taking out infected pulp and material from the interior of your tooth. This means that the tooth is now hollow and it makes the tooth able to be broken easier. The tooth is filled with a special material, and a dental crown completes the restoration. It gives the tooth the stability it needs to function normally, so you can still eat and chew normally.
While it’s a bigger restoration than needed for most discolored teeth, dental crowns can still be used for this. We may recommend using porcelain veneers for a simpler restoration where the dental ceramic only goes on the outside of your teeth.
Dental crowns are often used as the final restoration when you’re getting dental implants. They’re attached to the top of the implant post with an abutment so they’re secure and feel as natural as possible.
Crowns can also be used to support dental bridges. If the bridge is attached to your natural tooth, it can cause a lot of wear and tear. This may lead to tooth decay and further problems with those natural teeth. The dental crown gives the bridge a sturdier option that helps save the natural teeth underneath.
The Dental Crown Process
The process to get dental crowns takes two steps. First, Dr. White will remove some of the enamel from your tooth. This is so that there’s room for the crown and that it will look natural when it’s placed. An impression is then taken of this tooth and sent to a lab. There, they use high-quality dental ceramic to make a crown that’ll fit perfectly with your smile.
In the meantime, Dr. White may give you a temporary crown to wear until your custom one comes in. Once the custom one arrives, Dr. White will fit the crown and make sure there are no changes that need to be made. If you’re both satisfied with the restoration, he’ll then bond the crown to your natural tooth.
